The human brain has got a specially developed part called the prefrontal lobe of the neocortex. this part of the brain enables us to do the more difficult things.
In other words, it gives us the ability to feel what is pleasurable and what is not. it gives the ability that this is good I am going to do it or this is boring I will not do it.
So the trick then is to utilize the power of the prefrontal cortex in reconfiguring our mind. there are some ways to do that.
The prefrontal cortex is very much like a muscle of the human body. this was discovered by some researchers. just like your muscles get fatigued with usage and your will power also gets fatigued. for eg, if you do pushups at first it seems easy after the second you will start struggling and then after some pushups, you will completely become fatigued. similarly is your brain but the commonsense says that it should not get fatigued but it does very much like muscles.
There was a researcher named ROY F BAUMEISTER in Germany. he did an experiment in which first he divided children into two groups one group sent to a room where they had cookies placed on the table in front of them they were supposed not to eat the cookies. some children's held the cookies In their hands but did not eat them after this for some time they were taken out of the room and given a test. in this test, the average children last only for 8 minutes.
The other group of children was sent to a room where they can eat as many cookies as they want. after that, they were also given a test in which the average students last for about 30 minutes. thus they had more will power than the other children.
Similarly, that has important relevance to our lives. when we wake up in the morning our willpower is fully intact. but then you go outside in traffic you get exhausted and suppose if you have a bad boss and he keeps shouting at you and you cant shout back you get frustrated and by the time people finish their work their will power is very little and that explains why working couples fight at night because they have a very little will power to tolerate each other.
Develop self-control
like the muscles can be developed your self-control can also be developed because that's how your brain works. if you do mathematical activities for 2 hours every day the portion of your brain that is required for math is getting engaged daily. so it starts packing more and more grey matter there making it easier for you to do your math work so the willpower can also be enhanced by practicing it.
the more you practice self-control the better you will get at it. so every time you ward off distraction it becomes easier and easier. in other words, if you have an urge to scratch practice not to then your prefrontal cortex will become stronger. one of the best way to enhance your brainpower is
MEDITATION
The best and powerful technique to enhance self-control and self-discipline is meditation.
the prefrontal cortex has three portions to it
- Awareness-i want my goal
- I won't, I will not do it
- I will, I will do it
CONSEQUENCES
You are enhancing your ability for self-control. within 21 days it will become a habit to meditate. exert yourself with the strength of purpose with the understanding that this is an important ability to develop.
Force yourself initially until it becomes a habit once it does you will find that the quality of your life has improved.
